Verse 1 The serpent came in cool and low, "Yea, hath God said?" he breathed to me. He took the only word I'd know and bent it like a lowered tree. "You shall not surely die," he smiled, "your eyes will open, you'll be wise." (hath God said)
Pre-Chorus And something in me leaned to look, a hunger older than my name.
Chorus It was good for food, and pleasant to the eyes, a tree to make a woman wise. So I took, and I ate, and the silence opened wide, and I gave it to the man beside.
Verse 2 The skin I never knew was bare, the light came in and showed us plain. We sewed the fig leaves, hand in hand, and learned a shame we could not name. We heard Him walking through the land, the cool of evening, and our blame.
Pre-Chorus And something in me longed to run, to be unseen, to be unsame.
Chorus It was good for food, and pleasant to the eyes, a tree to make a woman wise. So I took, and I ate, and the silence opened wide, and I gave it to the man beside.
Bridge "Where art thou?" called the evening air. (where art thou) I said, I heard You, and I hid. I was afraid, I was laid bare, afraid of everything I did. "The woman that You gave to me," "The serpent, he beguiled me," and no one stayed to own the same, we passed it down the line like flame.
Chorus It was good for food, and pleasant to the eyes, a tree to make a woman wise. But I took, and I ate, and the garden closed its door, and it is not pleasant anymore.
Outro Upon your belly you will go, and dust is all you'll ever know. Cool of the day, cool of the day, the voice still asks me where I lay.
