Verse 1 He left before the light was up, no trumpet, no crowd at the gate. Ten of us stood in the doorway, one pound each, and no word on the date. And the town sent a letter behind him, "We won't have this man to reign," so I held my pound like a question in a country that swore he'd not come again.
Chorus Occupy till I come, that was all that he said. Not "hold it," not "hide it," not "keep it safe under your bed." Occupy till I come, spend the little you hold. It was never yours to keep, it was yours to unfold. Occupy till I come.
Verse 2 I folded mine into a napkin the way you would wrap up the dead, and called it a kind of devotion while the others went trading ahead. I'd heard he was hard, that he gathered from fields he had never sown, and fear does a fine impression of faith when you're keeping it clean and alone.
Chorus Occupy till I come, that was all that he said. Not "hold it," not "hide it," not "keep it safe under your bed." Occupy till I come, spend the little you hold. It was never yours to keep, it was yours to unfold. Occupy till I come.
Stripped-back Bridge I dreamed the road came up in dust and he rode home wearing a crown. One by one they went in, "ten cities," "five," and I stood with my cloth folded down. "Lord, here's your own. I kept it clean." He never raised his voice. "By your own words," was all he said, and what I'd never risked was gone, and I woke with it still in my palm. But the road tonight is empty, and the pound's still warm in my hand, and all of the mercy's in one small word: it's still "till." It isn't "come."
Final Chorus Occupy till I come, and I'm hearing it now. Not "hold it," not "hide it," not "wait on a sign or a vow." Occupy till I come, spend the little you hold. It was never yours to keep, it was yours to unfold. Occupy till I come.
Half-time Outro Faithful in a very little (till I come) faithful in a very little (till I come) It was never the pound he was counting, it was what you did with the day. (till I come) (till I come)
